Now More Than Ever, Local Retailers Have a Desperate Need for Online Copywriters

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a brutal impact on businesses, large and small. As a result, it’s tempting to think that every company out there is scaling back on both its marketing and copywriting. But a lot of companies are actually ramping up their online marketing efforts. And — as surprising as this may sound — this is particularly true for a lot of local retail companies. These are the companies in your community. The stores on Main Street and in your local malls. Many can’t open their doors. But they’re doing what they can to weather the storm. And this includes reaching out to their customers through the Web, by email, and via social media. Here are three examples from my own neighborhood … Example #1: There’s a bookstore a few blocks down the road from our home — it is now closed. My wife and I spend way too much time and…

20 Ways to Stand Out As a Professional Web Copywriter in 2020

“What’s the most difficult challenge you’ve ever faced, and how did you handle it?” “Describe a time in your life that has shaped who you are as a person.” My 17-year-old son had to answer these questions and others like them when writing essays for college entrance applications and scholarships. He was on track to graduate as one of the top students in his high school class, yet these essay questions stressed him out. He was facing the reality that grades alone weren’t enough to get him into the schools he wanted to attend. Just listing his extra-curricular activities and community involvement wasn’t enough, either. “How can you make yourself stand out and be memorable?” I asked him as I explained why these questions were part of the application process. The schools and scholarship committees wanted to know him. They were looking for reasons to choose him over equally qualified applicants. Sounds a lot like…

Freelance writing gigs suck big time!

Or they can if you let freelance writing gigs get you down. Let me explain… One of the things all new freelancers struggle with is self-confidence and, to be honest, that's something that never really goes away completely. No matter how experienced you get, there will always be times when you wonder if your writing is quite good enough. As you become a better writer and gain more traction, that creeping feeling of self-doubt tends to manifest itself slightly differently. For example, I recently landed a job, working for an agency, where I had to come up with three different styles of brand communication voice for a client of theirs. Although it's the kind of thing I've tackled several times before, writing for a brand-new client (even through an agency) is one of the most challenging parts of freelancing. It's also the time when that little bit of self-doubt can creep back…

The Coronavirus (Covid 19) Unexpected Affect on Freelancers and Work from Home Entrepreneurs

There’s an old saying that it’s an “ill wind that blows no one any good” and the current Coronavirus is nothing if not an ill wind of proportions few of us could have anticipated. To try and contain the pandemic, many office workers, usually subject to the daily commute, are being forced to pre-emptively self-isolate and work from home. Over and above this, schools are being forced to become more creative in an effort to ensure our kids’ education continues despite the Coronavirus. There’s a growing realization (probably long overdue) that education doesn’t necessarily consist of a teacher stood up in front of 20 or 30 learners and we do have the technology to make remote learning a reality for a growing number of our kids. Both my children (16 and 19) did formal schooling up to age 14 and went on to study the GED remotely from home. It doesn’t seem…

Work at home opportunity scams to avoid

Whether you're looking to make a little extra on the side or you want to create a full-time, job replacing income, finding the right work at home opportunity can open up the doors to financial stability, money security and peace of mind. However, it's difficult sifting through the vast array of opportunities online to find something that actually works, let alone provides you with a decent amount of income for your efforts. Over the course of years working online, I've tried and tested just about every work at home opportunity you can think of. I've been fortunate enough to work for myself, at home, since 2000 so you might say I have some experience of this. During this time, I've noticed certain similarities that keep repeating themselves over and over. I've come to realize that there are certain money-making schemes you should avoid completely because they take up huge amounts of time…
